HOW DO YOU KNOW IT'S TIME TO UPDATE YOUR WEBSITE?
Oct 10, 2014
Surprise! We have a new website! It’s been a long time coming, and something we wanted to get exactly right before we launched it to the world.
But how do you know it’s time to give your website a refresh? If any of the following are true for you, then now is the time!
Your company has evolved, but your website hasn’t
When The Creation Lab started out, we were a company of 1. Our director, Matt Soper, started out by himself in a little office, selling virtual tours to local businesses. Jump forward a few years and the company has moved 3 times, gained 7 employees and expanded to offer a wide range of digital services. However, our website had stayed the same, and it started to feel as though we had outgrown it. Whether you’re a small business that has grown over the years, or you’re a large business with a new vision or strategy, it may be time to re-think your website.
It doesn’t look good on a mobile phone
This year Google has specifically stated that websites should be “smartphone-optimised”, which means that to rank well in Google, your website should work well on a mobile. There are 2 solutions for this - responsive design and separate mobile sites. Responsive designs (Google recommends this method) are designed to fit into any screen size, while still keeping it easy to navigate. A separate mobile site redirects users to a different URL depending on whether you are on a desktop or mobile device. If your current website doesn’t offer either of these solutions, it may be time for a new website.
You can’t update the website yourself
If you don’t have access to your website to update the content, it can become a bit difficult and even expensive to make changes to your content. Some web companies charge to make content updates, so it’s not financially viable to makes the changes even if you want to. Because Google places regularly updated content in high esteem, it makes sense to have a website with a content management system.
It’s visually outdated
Your website plays a big part in how people view your business. If it looks old and tired, it will not reflect well on your brand. Take a look at the biggest names in your industry and compare their website’s design to yours – is there anything you could improve upon? Bringing your site up to date will guarantee a positive effect on your company, whereas leaving it outdated is likely to make your company look like you don’t care about your customers.
It’s not ranking well in search engines
Has your website slipped down in search engine rankings recently? Google regularly makes changes to the way it ranks websites, so it’s often nothing you’ve done that has affected your ranking. Rather, if you’ve not done anything about your SEO in a while, a new website design with fast loading pages, correct meta data and good functionality will help Google to take notice of your business.
Are any of these true for your website? If so, it may be time for an update.
