Our Top 10 Tips from the Digital Marketing Show
Nov 20, 2015
The Digital Marketing Show brings together business owners, freelancers, marketing professionals and SEO specialists in one fantastic exhibition at London ExCel. Featuring 7 seminar theatres and over 50 exhibitors, the show is chocked full of digital marketing inspiration and insights for businesses great and small.
In case you missed it, or even if you did attend, we’ve collected 10 top tips from the show that we hope you’ll find useful!
1. If you are exhibiting at a trade show, keep it simple, and keep it friendly.
We did not exhibit this year, but by walking around as delegates, it was clear to see that bold branding and friendly faces were the makings of a successful stand. ROAST’s bright yellow branding (complete with stress pigs for all) and RadioVille’s vintage picnic set-up were both fantastic examples.
2. By writing regular content, you are already ahead of most of your competitors online.
Connor Kinnear from Passle offered interesting statistics on how many pieces of online content is produced on average within different industries. Some were as low as 1 piece of content every 2 years!
3. Use Buzzsumo to find the names of journalists who have shared articles similar to ones you’re looking to promote, and send it to them directly, in case they’re interested. We already use BuzzSumo and find it so useful for content research.
4. Infographics.
One of the buzz words of the day over in the content hub. It’s not like they are a new concept, but it seems like they are far from worn out, as far as digital marketing is concerned. If you want to use Pinterest to amplify your brand but cannot offer pretty photos of your products, try an infographic.
5. Do not underestimate the importance of outreach.
Backlinks are still integral for SEO, but rather than simply dropping links on random websites across the internet, link building is now interwoven with content. That’s why our SEO packages include blog writing and social media in conjunction, to include both content and outreach.
6. In his fantastic seminar on hacking the news, Joe Shervell of Datadial recommended Contagious by Jonah Berger as an essential read for understanding more about viral content.
“Word of mouth is 10 times as effective as traditional advertising, but why do people talk about and share certain things rather than others? Why do some products catch on, some ideas diffuse, and some online content go viral?”- Jonah Berger, Contagious
7. It can be a good idea to have a little bank of blog posts, ready to share online when the moment is right. For example, an article about Britain’s reaction to snow – be patient and wait until it is actually snowing!
8. In a blog post, news article or any other piece of written content, add a call-to-action halfway down the page.
This is in case you have captured someone’s attention enough for them to want to contact you because statistics show that most readers will not stay loyal to your post and read until the end.
9. Brainstorm outside the office at least once a week. Perhaps in a park, or a café, depending on the weather!
10. A strong, collaborative team is integral to a successful campaign.
Irma Hunkeler and Robert Taylor from BlueGrass stressed that rather than separate departments working on their tasks in isolation, it is so important to unite on a project to maximise its potential.
Were you at the Digital Marketing Show this year? Think there’s anything we’ve missed? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
