10 WAYS TO GET MORE FOLLOWERS ON TWITTER
Jun 18, 2013
Setting up a Twitter account takes about 5 minutes, but getting followers is a much harder task. These tips will help you gather some more followers and make Twitter a valuable resource for your business.
1. Personalise your account. Before you set off on your Twitter journey, you have to look good. If you don’t have a profile picture it either looks like you’re a novice or that you can’t be trusted. Use your company logo, or if you are a one person business, use a professional-looking headshot. You can also customise your profile background to fit with your branding.
2. Write a good bio. Be specific about who you are and what you do, making it easy to be found in Twitter’s search results. Adding a link to your website also means people can check you out before following you, as well as creating a nice backlink for your website!
3. Start following others. This is probably the fastest way to gain followers when you are just starting out; once you start following people, they will often return the favour and follow you back. Start by finding the leading authorities in your industry, then you could search through their followers to find people with similar interests.
4. Tell people you’re on Twitter. Yes, it’s a simple point, but how are your customers and friends going to know unless you tell them? Add it to your website, email footer, business cards, Facebook profile – wherever you can!
5. Tweet at the right times. Although you may come up with great links to share late at night or early in the morning – save it for a more popular time. Between 1pm and 3pm is said to be when Twitter users are most active, meaning you’re more likely to get retweeted if you post within these times. Scheduling your tweets with a tool such as Hootsuite is very useful.
6. Make it short and sweet! The most retweetable content is easy to read and can be understood within a glance. Try to stay well below the 140 character limit if you can.
7. Be generous with what you share. If you know about a half-price sale or you’ve read a really helpful blog post, share it with others! It’s these valuable pieces of information that people will retweet.
8. Ask for retweets. This can be very effective, if used sparingly. Don’t beg for it after everything you share, but something friendly like, “I found this useful – retweet if you did too!” works quite well.
9. Don’t make it all about you. Lots of tweets promoting your products, your services and your blog will put people off. Engage with others, retweeting what you find useful and joining in with other conversations.
10. Use appropriate hashtags. Tweets using hashtags get twice the amount of engagement as tweets without hashtags. If used correctly, they are a great way to attract more followers.
