10 QUESTIONS EVERY WEBSITE OWNER MUST ASK
Jul 24, 2013
If you own a website, make sure you ask yourself these 10 questions regularly. This will make sure your website is as effective as it can be!
What is the purpose of this website?
Your website needs to have a clear purpose, whether it’s to provide general information about your company or to sell specific products. You also need to remember your target audience and make sure the website is appropriate to them.
Would I use it if I didn’t own it?
If it’s not something you’d use, how do you expect anyone else to be interested by it? You could also ask friends and colleagues to give their honest opinions.
Can visitors find key information quickly?
If it’s an e-commerce website, people want to know about delivery charges. If it’s a general website about your company, a contact number is essential. Make sure these pieces of information are displayed on your homepage, or can at least be found easily.
Does every page have a goal?
Take a look at each page of your website and remind yourself why you put it there. Does it reflect that goal well? If the answer is no, you’ll want to look at re-writing some of your web content.
Is the navigation clear?
People who surf the net are easily distracted – with thousands of websites battling for their attention. Make sure yours is the one they stick to by creating a clear navigation, preferably along the top of the page.
Can everyone see my website?
Check your website across a range of internet browsers to make sure it appears on all of them. Also, if you’re website contains a lot of Flash content, you’ll have to be aware that it won’t be seen by everyone. Finally, find out if your website is responsive to mobile devices.
Is my website search engine friendly?
Check your website’s meta-tags and double check you are not violating any of Google’s webmaster guidelines. For example, have you bought lots of backlinks in the past, or have you bought content from an SEO company who has stuffed your website with keywords?
Do people contact me via the website?
This is possibly one of the easiest ways to find out whether your website is working as it should be. If you aren’t getting any responses through your website, you will need to assess why. It could be that your online contact form asks for too many personal details, or perhaps your “contact us” page is really difficult to find.
Does my website encourage community?
Can visitors pin pages to Pinterest or Tweet your blog posts? Adding these icons to your website will encourage people to share your website with others.
When was the last time I updated my website?
Fresh content is essential to maintaining a good website; it keeps people interested and can improve your Google ranking. As for design, if your website is more than a few years old you may want to look into bringing it up to date.
