SIMPLE WAYS TO MAKE YOUR WEBSITE BETTER TODAY
Jun 19, 2014
Here at The Creation Lab we often compare websites to brick-and-mortar stores – in the same way that a shop in the high street needs a fresh lick of paint every so often, a website needs regular “virtual maintenance” to keep it in tip-top condition.
Now I know that time is a precious thing, and there may not be much (or any) time set aside in your week for website maintenance. But fret not; here are some simple things you can do that won’t take up too much of your time, while offering great results for your website.
Write or re-write meta tags
If you want to improve your website’s ranking on Google, simply re-writing your meta tags might help. Your meta tags are what shows in Google’s search results when people search for your website.
Meta Tags
In your title tag, include the name of your company, the name of the page and your location. When it comes to the description tag, try to include one or two keywords within the first few words of the sentence. Lastly, include between 5 and 10 meta keywords.
Read and tweak your copy
Reading through the pages of your website won’t take long, but by doing this you can identify any updates which need to be made to the content. This will give your website visitors a better experience as they browse your website, and it will also work in your favour for SEO. Google’s algorithm will recognise the changes you have made, and may improve your search rankings.
Check all links
There’s nothing more annoying when you’re browsing a website than clicking on a link that doesn’t work. A simple way to “clean up” your website is to go through each page and check that these links still work. It’s inevitable that, over time, a page you have linked to no longer exists, which will end up looking bad on you rather than the page itself.
Update your testimonials
If your website features customer reviews or testimonials, it’s a good idea to keep them up to date, so that potential customers are reassured that your product or service is relevant today. If your last testimonial is from over a year ago, consider asking one or two people for some fresh reviews of your services, and add them to the website.
Change your images
To refresh the look of your website today, you can change the images to more recent and relevant ones. Perhaps your website currently uses stock images – do you have some photos of your staff that you could replace them with? If not, even changing the stock images to newer ones will add some variety.
Delete old products or services
If you own an online shop, a great way to make your website better is to delete products that you no longer stock. It may seem fairly obvious and you may be on top of it, but sometimes there are products that slip through the net and remain on the website, even though you’ve stopped selling them.
Even if you do just one of these things today, your website will be better for it! If you have any questions about anything in this article please do get in touch with us at The Creation Lab.
