MANAGING YOUR WEB CONTENT
Nov 06, 2014
About to launch a stunning new website? Don’t let the side down with poor copy.
When creating a new website, it’s easy to get caught up in the design process, leaving the written content as an after-thought. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as copying and pasting text from your old site. Managing your web content is an on-going process, but it doesn’t have to be complicated.
“When you mix great copy and great design magical things can happen.”
- John McPherson, Media Surgery
WHERE SHALL I START?
First impressions
When a user visits your website for the first time, they won’t see the text and imagery as separate entities, but as one unit. Your design and copy should complement each other. Imagine watching a film with the wrong audio over the top - you won’t be able to appreciate it. A website should be treated in the same way.
Keep your readers interested
The majority of visitors will scan through your text to see if it interests them. Your website may provide them with what they are looking for, but it’s irrelevant if they can’t find it or become bored before they do. Be crisp, clear and concise. Focus on reading time and page engagement. Worry less about tracking article views and instead concentrate on producing original, accurate and unique content to keep visitors on your page - Google also detects this and it will Increase SEO.
Avoiding silly mistakes
It is extremely important to take time proof-reading your writing, and seeking a second opinion, every time you update your website’s content. People will not take you seriously if your website is full of spelling and grammar mistakes.
WHAT NEXT?
Don’t get left behind
It’s important to keep your copy up-to-date. If your products or services ever change, it is vital that your website is accurate.
New words are added to the Oxford Dictionary Online every year. Although we’re not necessarily suggesting that you start incorporating some of this year’s entries, such as “YOLO”, “Hench” or “Man Beard” into your homepage, it is important to keep your content fresh. Trends are constantly changing and it’s important to read through your copy regularly so you don’t fall behind the competition.
Maintain your high standards
It is important to occasionally read through your content and tweak it, where appropriate. As you update your website and add to the content, take the time to ensure that your site is consistent, both in terms of tone and quality.
Once you have a well-designed website, and flawless copy to complement it, your potential is limitless.
