Is your business stuck in the past? A new report says...Maybe!
Aug 06, 2015
It’s official. Smartphones are not the future, they are the present!
This is according to a report by Ofcom, the communications watchdog, who says that smartphones have become the device of choice for internet access. 66% of British households have a smartphone, narrowly beating the 65% that have laptops.
But it’s not just the vast number of smartphones that has attributed to their iconic toppling of the monolithic laptop and desktop computers – people are also spending almost double the amount of time browsing the internet on smartphones than on their antiquated counterparts. In March 2015, Britons spent an average 58 hours and 39 minutes browsing the internet and using apps on their phones, but just 31 hours and 19 minutes on laptops and desktops.
Overshadowed in this report by its older brother, the smartphone, the tablet has also made steady progress on its leisurely jaunt to superiority. In the last year tablet ownership has risen to 54% of households, up ten percentage points, and in 35-54 year olds this rises further to a sneaky good 64%. Don’t count out the over-55s though. Statistically they are less likely to own a tablet, but they are catching on quick; Tablet ownership in this group is nine times higher than it was three years ago (37% vs. 4%)!
Aside from the sibling rivalry between smartphones and tablets, the Liam and Noel Gallagher of the technology world, this report throws up a very important question for business owners about their online presence.
