5 Things We Have Learnt From The Apprentice 2016
Dec 02, 2016
We in the office have been enjoying a bit of the apprentice as of late, and whilst watching, we found it an undeniable fact that there were plenty of top tips to take away from the programme. So we thought it only right to make a list of all the highly important findings that have come a cropper.
1 – When making a promotional video, ensure it makes sense.
When creating a promotional video for your website, a top tip we learnt from the advertising task on the Apprentice was to ensure it makes sense. The two teams opted for a more, shall we say… random approach to producing their videos where you couldn’t even tell what they were selling.
A better idea when it comes to using video for your business is to find your target audience and tailor the content towards them and the product/service you are providing.
2 – Try not to literally snatch cash out of your customer’s hands.
Just as a matter of courtesy, it may be best if you don’t literally snatch money out of your customer’s hands like Alana did in the sweets task on week 3. Of course it can be tempting when it’s right there in front of you, but you may find yourself loosing customers if you behave in this way.
3 – Make sure your packaging reflects the product
Seen in the second ever task that Sir Alan Sugar gave to the contestants, each team had to come up with some packaging for a pair of high end jeans. Whereas one team opted for a box with a pretty design inside, the other decided to use round, brown cardboard boxes.
Packaging like this, although it may work for some, doesn’t scream high end fashion. When it comes to designing the packaging for your products make sure that it reflects the nature of what you are offering. If your product is a futuristic gadget, make sure it looks as such when on the shelf in shops to entice customers in.
4 – Give your suppliers a good deal
A few weeks back we saw the candidates from one team offer the great deal of 40% discount when their suppliers bought 12 of their products, along with a 40% discount if their suppliers bought 1000 of their products… Hold on a minute. It didn’t take long for them to realise their mistake, but unfortunately it was far too late by that point.
If you are going to offer a deal to your customers, it might be a good idea to consider if it makes sense before putting it to them. This way you can avoid embarrassment and sell more of your goods to suppliers.
5 – Don’t sell priceless antiques for a tenner
If something has a guide price of say £100, it probably doesn’t make good business sense to go out and sell it for a tenner. But alas, this didn’t stop those pesky apprentice stars on week one of the show!
Probably more of a common sense thing, but we thought we’d include it anyway – don’t undersell your products!
So that’s all the top business tips courtesy of The Apprentice stars! Oh we can’t wait to see what else we can learn from watching next week!
