Are Emojis Becoming a Language of Their Own?
Jan 20, 2017
After a company announced last week that they are hiring their first ever ‘Emoji Translator’ we think it’s time to address the fact that emoji’s have gone from a fun novelty to an actual language! The Oxford dictionary even announced the ‘Face with tears of joy’ emoji as the word of the year for 2016… is this crazy or actually a smart idea?
Emoji’s are the first universally understood language of the 21st century, whether you are from Japan or Spain you can tell what they mean, so are they helping to bridge language barriers? Apple have even installed a new touch bar feature in their laptops that includes the little smileys, so are we seeing an altogether new language being developed? We have looked into a future of the emoji language to find out!
Passwords
It has been suggested that emoji’s could start to find their way into our personal and business passwords. They are considered to be a safer option due to the amount of combinations and options there are to choose from – over 3.5 million! This will make it harder for fraudsters to hack into, and although you might be thinking it will be more difficult to remember it has actually be shown that emoji’s are a lot more recognisable and therefore memorable!
So easier to remember and harder to hack into – why not use emoji’s as passwords?! It seems the emoji language could really open doors for security.
Sign language
Those of us who are deaf have been using sign language for years, but could emoji’s open the door to new means of communicating for the disabled? Facial expressions are a great way to gauge how people are feeling, so using them in written conversation could really change the way deaf people can communicate. The combination of sign language and emoji use could combine to create an all new system of language for the deaf; it could even help them to communicate better by seeing the symbols or expressions someone is feeling.
Art
As well as simple icons for texting, emoji’s have quickly become very popular in everyday culture. If you head to the shops, you will be sure to come across cushions or cards covered in the creatures; there is even set to be an emoji movie coming out! What started out as way to coax more people into texting has changed into something a lot more universal, and you never know - could influence modern art!
Although some people might think reverting to communicating in pictures is backwards, it could actually provide better security and enhance our language skills. There are a lot of mixed emotions (or emoji’s) around this issue, what are your thoughts on the little smileys making their way into our bank account passwords and businesses?
Leave your comments below; we’d love to hear your thoughts!
