Why More Websites Doesn't Necessarily Mean Better SEO
Jan 24, 2017
With the New Year well and truly upon us, SEO is something that everyone is talking about. Out with the old and in with the new for 2017, and we have already posted a blog all about the trends tipped to dominate this year, but if you are not sure how you can improve your SEO ranking it could be suggested that you have more than one domain for your site. However, this is not the answer for boosting your ranking in Google, in fact in can have adverse effects for your company.
Take a look at why having multiple domains for your website isn’t the answer for improving SEO this year, or ever!
Duplicate content
A big issue with having multiple domains for your website is the fact that most of your content will be duplicated, this tends to result in your site being lower down in Google’s SEO rankings. Google works to show a diverse range of results when someone searches, so if there is duplicate content on your sites, only one will show up in the results. This will normally be the site where the content originated, so make sure this is the website you want to be showing if you have multiple sites.
Overall, Google is programmed to push duplicated content down the SEO rankings, so having multiple sites with the same information on won’t work in your favour in the long run and you could end up with an even worse SEO ranking overall.
Confusing for customers
If you have a physical store, having multiple websites that list the same address can be confusing for customers. Two different websites will have to have different domain names, so this can lead to customers thinking they are two separate companies.
Another issue is the double branding, with two websites how will you answer the phone? If you are an ecommerce website, will the prices remain the same across the two sites? Having two business names will put a lot of strain on your company and can cause confusion for your customers, we personally advise against it.
Double the SEO work
Just having two sites won’t automatically improve your SEO ranking; you will have to put in the same amount of work to both sites in order for them to both rank well within Googles search. There are no shortcuts when it comes to Google rankings so if you want both of your websites to rank well, you will have to put in the same amount of work to both of them.
When it comes to having more than one domain for your website, we think it’s more harmful than helpful if you don’t get it right. If you are skilled in the field and know what you are doing multiple domains won’t harm your SEO ranking, but it won’t have much effect on it either.
It can also prove confusing for customers and more work for your company in the long run, we personally can’t see much benefit to it.
