Google Introduces New App Technologies
Feb 07, 2017
Apps are a great resource for any business; you can build trust and a sense of familiarity with your customers as well as giving them a way of accessing your details without an internet connection. They are easy to use, and with the time we spend on mobile devices only increasing, they are certain to improve your business's reach.
However, if you don’t have the time to develop an app, there is now a new technology that Google have introduced called Progressive Web Apps. What it means is that on the latest Android Chrome beta you’ll now get the option of ‘add to home screen’ when browsing on certain sites. This allows websites to appear like any other app on the phone without having to go through the hassle of making one. This is a great resource for businesses to further the reach of their website, and it could mean a lot more customers decide to use you.
Progressive Web Apps will allow the user to control their notification from the notification management controls like other apps instead of in the Chrome settings. This will improve user experience as the website will start to act like an app on your phone, and it will become easier to change the settings whenever you need to.
This technology means sites are fast loading and have great immersive user experience just like any other app – even working without internet connection thanks to a caching feature! This will bridge the gap between apps and websites and mean it is much easier for a customer to have your website saved and always available on their home screen.
Another feature progressive web apps allows is the ability to set ‘intents’ – what this means is that when you click onto a URL, you will be directed to the app that is saved on your home screen.
One down fall to this feature is that it takes a huge commitment from developers to create this system on websites which means they haven’t widely caught on just yet, but the technology is very forward thinking and gives users new ways of discovering your business.
There are lots of great features that the Progressive Web Apps allow, however due to the current technicality to producing them it could be a while before we see them catching on in all website builds.
