Why Video headers are a Great Idea
Mar 31, 2017
When it comes to web design, video headers or animations are one of the best ways to attract the attention of visitors- and potential clients. We’ve recently updated ours (you can take a look here) and we aim to update it seasonally, adding something a little different and exciting to our website!
Videos don’t have to make up large backgrounds in order for them to be effective, which is why we’ve chose to use ours as a header. Videos on a smaller scale like this can prove to be just as effective for showing off information to visitors or just to add some individuality compared to competitors. Though not every industry will benefit from a video header, they can be used by many in order to benefit the overall website design and company branding.
The video header style that works best will have heavy contrast. For example, if you’re going for a light video, you’ll want the text on the page to be dark. This works vice versa too; a website with a dark video should have lighter text. Videos that are not too busy and only feature a few colours work best.
If you are deciding to opt for a video header on your website, you’ll need to think about whether or not to include music and if you are, do you want it to auto-play? Sound can add an entirely different dimension to your video and website, but it can be a flaw. Most video headers are muted by default, as many people who are browsing the internet will be listening to their own music. If unexpected music comes from a website, it can be a shock and an annoyance to the visitor. This could turn them away from your website almost immediately, especially if they don’t have the option to turn the sound on and off.
It’s important to ensure that your video headers are compatible with all browsers, or at least the ones that are used most by your visitors. If you have analytics, use it to your advantage and check which browsers are most commonly used to view your website. Can I Use is a great website that can provide you with a detailed analysis of CSS and JavaScript properties.
File size is also important, as you may experience some issues with slow loading speeds if using larger files. Did you know that 40% of people won’t stay on your website if it takes longer than 3 seconds to load? This proves that it’s vital you get the quickest loading speed possible to avoid any potential clients from leaving.
We love video headers, and we think they work well for most businesses. We’ve even created some fantastic video headers for our clients, including Ruxley Manor, who opted for subtle inner page video headers, which really add something new and exciting to their web pages!
