Why we need Diversity in Business
Mar 10, 2017
With International Women’s Day causing a storm on social media and throughout the world on Wednesday, we took a look at the importance of diversity within all industries, including media, and how an assortment of people can really work to a business’ advantage.
Diversity incorporates race, gender, ethnicity, age, education, sexual preference, background and more. It is not only how people observe themselves, but also how they see others, and this can hugely affect the way people interact with each other. In order for people to function effectively as work colleagues, they need to learn to communicate, adapt and change. The diversity in business has increased significantly over the years, with successful organisations recognising the need for action.
Diversity can hugely benefit the workplace, in all industries and business’. A business’ success can massively depend on their ability to embrace diversity, and the benefits will follow.
Increased Adaptability
Organisations that hire a diverse group of employees are able to supply a greater variety of thoughts, ideas and solutions. People from a range of diverse backgrounds can bring individuality, talent and a variety of previous experience. A business that hires the same type of person with the same experience and knowledge will suffer from the lack of originality.
Innovation
Employees who are working alongside people from different backgrounds and experiences can work together in order to create new concepts from ideas, feedback and suggestions. Though one employee can generate exciting ideas, another person could have the experience needed in order to execute it. Knowing where individual strengths lie is ideal for a booming business.
More Talent
Companies that embrace diversity can attract a huge range of candidates to their job roles. You will be viewed as a progressive business, and will therefore appeal to a huge variety of people. As the number of people who apply for a job rises, the chance of finding the ideal candidate for your business will also increase. Current employees are also more likely to stay with your business if you promote equality and are accommodating to all.
Improved Employee Performance
If comfortable and happy employees are something you want to promote and encourage, diverse environments can help to do this. Equality helps to encourage employees to feel confident in their skills and experience. A team with a high morale can result in a productive and successful workplace.
