Food for Thought: Why your Facebook Header Matters...
Jul 21, 2017
Has your current Facebook header got any purpose, and have you put much thought into it?
The likelihood is that you’ve not thought about it- don’t worry! You’re not alone.
The header image on a Facebook business page takes up a lot of space, space that if used effectively can help showcase the personality of the brand, and in turn help to convert visitors into customers. Worldwide, there were over 1.94 billion monthly active Facebook users in March 2017, and this is only set to increase 18% year on year, so optimising your page to the fullest is important in gaining attention.
The image should not only look nice, but it should serve a purpose and represent your brand in the best way possible. We’ve put together a few tips to designing an effective Facebook header.
1. Get to know the sizing
Knowing the size of the header is the first thing you need to know before designing your header. At the moment the header cover photo displays at 820 x 312 pixels on a desktop and on a smartphone displays at 640 x 360 pixels. However, this can alter due to Facebook updates and changes, and as a result, you may want to consider having the most important components centred to avoid cropping.
2. Stay on Brand
The cover image should show personality but should always be on brand. However, avoid slapping a logo in the middle as more than likely your logo will be your profile picture anyway. Use your cover image to promote campaigns or events that you have going on; this keeps your page fresh with exciting updates. Your header image is a way to build upon a theme which will boost brand recognition.
If you are struggling for design ideas things to look at are-
Colour Palette – What are your company colours? Match your website and logo colours to reinforce brand recognition.
Font – It’s a good idea to also use the same if not similar type face than the one you use on your website and or packaging.
Logo features – Take inspiration from the company logo in terms of graphics and shapes. Are there any elements you can pull out to feature in your header?
3. What is the aim?
Finally, what is your objective? Header images are a great space for promoting your brand and the service or product you are selling.
Use the space to inspire the visitor to navigate either to your website or maybe to enter a competition you are running! Your header could be promoting a new product you’ve recently launched. It really is up to you in terms of what you want your header to achieve.
There is a lot more to a Facebook header than you may have first anticipated; it’s a valuable space which your business needs to use effectively! Take some time to really design and think about what you want to achieve through your Facebook page and header.
