Food for Thought: Need Inspiration for a new website design? Check these out…
Jun 09, 2017
It only takes 0.05 seconds for a user to form an opinion about your website.
A website is your second store front, if not your only one. You need it looking amazing, responsive and full of fresh content. The design is the basis of your website, the starting point to getting your brand noticed, and with so much competition on Google, you need a seriously amazing design.
The way your site looks tells users whether they want to interact or do business with you- one glance can turn someone into a customer, or force that person to click away. When creating a bespoke web design you are given a completely blank canvas to work with, which sometimes can be daunting and overwhelming. A little outside influence can help provide you with new perspectives and inspire you to come up with great ideas. We’ve produced a list of places to find inspiration for your new site…
Awwwards
Keep up with current design trends with Awwwards’, ‘Site of the Month’ and ‘Site of the Day’ feature. Plus once you’re happy and your website is live, why not suggest your own site? You’ll receive reviews on it from other people on the site.
Search by category, colour or sites that are popular for endless inspiration.
P.S. Prepare to spend hours on this site…there is just so much!
Behance
A platform in which designers can upload their work, the site allows you to search and filter all the work to see a curated edit of what you are looking for. There is so much that along with web design this platform covers any form of creative work from architecture to motion graphics. So, be careful not to get caught up in the black hole of creative work and end up looking at a beautifully designed building built in Pairs in 2004.
This is a great way to curate any inspiration you find in one place. On Pinterest you make ‘Boards’ which are essentially folders that you keep your images in. So, if you wanted to separate your findings into separate boards to make thing easier you can do this. For example, if you wanted, you could have a board for the colour palette and one for any design features. If you are completely unbeknown to the world of Pinterest and don’t know your ‘Pin’ from your ‘Repin,’ then check out our Simple Guide to…Pinterest for a glossary and a lesson in the art of pinning.
The FWA – Favourite Website Awards
A website showcasing high-quality design work from agencies located globally. It’s also a great way to see how FWA judge designs and the process they go through. It’s useful to know what the requirements are to achieve a good design.
One Page Love
If you are a fan of big striking images on a websites landing page; this site is for you! There are tons of different ways and ideas on how to lay text over images and how to create a striking landing page for your website.
From Up North
This site is an online magazine style website that mixes a wealth of design inspiration with interesting articles. The site is easy to use and great for modern, sophisticated designs ranging from web design to print.
Coolors
Colour is an important part of the design framework. Often colour is taken from your branding but if you’re starting afresh then this website is great for coming up with a complimenting colour palette.
Google Fonts
Never forget the style of typography when designing your website. Your content is so important in telling your user what you are about in more detail. Clear content married with strong images is a winning design recipe! We recommend Google Fonts, it’s so simple to use and test out a magnitude of different style of fonts styles.
Key Things to Remember: Tips from our TCL designer
Think about your brand, your product or service- your design should be a direct reflection of who you are as a company. If you already have a logo, that can act as a great starting point in creating a sleek, on-brand design. Stick with the colour palette and angles within that. If you don’t have a logo yet, don’t worry, take inspiration from your products or service instead, e.g. wedding websites need a big gallery and beautiful elegant visuals. Whereas a plumbing site will need a testimonial and a big phone number and call to action button.
