Google sets to imitate features found on Snapchat
Oct 06, 2017
Google is set to rival Snapchat as it prepares to launch its competitor, known as Googler Stamp. The new product will bring a whole host of new marketing opportunities, but also many challenges.
Back in 2016, a bid to buy Snapchat for a reported $30 million by Google was rejected. Since then, Google has decided to, instead, mimic some of the functionalities that have made Snapchat such a big hit, especially with the younger generation.
So, what do you need to know about Google Stamp? We’ve outlined the basics to get you up to date.
So, what is Google Stamp?
The name Google Stamp is a portmanteau created by uniting the abbreviation ‘St’ from the word ‘Stories’ and the acronym AMP, from the Google-led Accelerated Mobile Pages initiative. AMP is a feature that allows the loading time of online news stories to go out at a much faster speed.
Google Stamp is going up against Snapchat Discover, which is an area on the Snapchat app that allows users to view news stories and ads, which can be skipped by a swipe of a finger. There have been suggestions that the upcoming Google product will echo this, with articles popping up in a magazine- like design. However, there is yet to be a release date for this new product; The Washington Post suggested we may see this roll out as early as the beginning of next year.
Who will be able to publish on Google Stamp?
If Stamp sits just below Googles search bar, it will give publishers the chance to attract the attention of billions of daily users, with Google already in talks with power players such as CNN, The Washington Post, Time and Vox Media. “Ever since the beginning of AMP we’ve constantly collaborated with publishers, and are working on many new features,” a Google spokesperson told The Washington Post. That is, however, for the immediate launch- we wonder how long it will take to open to the second tier of content creators, fashion brands and bloggers who want some space to tell their own stories, in turn opening a massive door to the world of advertising.
To sum up Google Stamp- it will be a publishing platform that allows brands to tell stories in a new fashion, optimised for mobile. However, there are still so many unanswered questions surrounding the new product; How will Google Stamp rank posts? Will Stamp be a fixed feature on Googles homepage? Will publishers create different content for Stamp, or re-use Instagram and Snapchat stories? It’s such an opportunity for brands to create something new and exciting in collaboration with Google, but when it is released and what it will look like remains unseen, for now.
