The iPhone 7: Handy or a Hassle?
Sep 09, 2016
The new iPhone 7 was unveiled across the world yesterday and as speculated they have got rid of the headphone jack to try and improve the battery life and water resistance of the product. They now offer Airpods – wireless headphones that use Apples own technology rather than Bluetooth and still accept calls from the phone – all yours for a mere £159.
Although this is a revolutionary move from the company, many people have taken the time to put their two pence to the idea, and not all are happy about it. The product has been ridiculed across social media platforms, with people comparing them to Snoopy, Electric toothbrush heads and even cutting the wires off of their existing Apple headphones.
As we are a digital company we thought it’s only right to take the time to list what we found to be the top pros and cons of the new technology.
Pros
No more tangles!
Can it be? The times of taking your headphones from your pocket and finding them more tangled than the 2010 Disney film are a thing of the past!
Without the wires connected to the headphones, quite obviously that means you won’t have to worry about them getting into a mess when you’re not using them, you’ll just have to worry about where you last left them…
Minimalised
Some people have heavily praised the Airpods for their minimalism and sleek design features including the capability to control Siri. They are one step up from the Apple watch, now you don’t even have to raise your wrist to interact with the iPhone!
For those who love the idea of randomly speaking out loud in public to connect with their phone instead of just picking it up, this will be great news!
Future technology
Although the move to get rid of the headphone jack has left many unhappy, others say that it is a step forward for technology which can never be a bad thing. Despite the cons of the product, it is still a brand new technology that works well and people are sure will catch on in time.
We wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung started utilising this idea in their next phone instead of the spontaneous combustion they are currently trialling.
Cons
You can only use apple headphones
For those people who don’t want to be paying nearly £160 for some headphone, or even the £20 for some regular Apple headphones (us) you may not be as happy with the new iPhone. Although the phone comes with an adaptor to plug headphones into the charging port, the adaptor is only suitable for the apple headphones that come with it.
So we guess that means holding onto the ones that come with the phone forever, because nothing will justify that £20 being spent.
You will probably lose them – and your 160 quid
Although Apple has addressed the issue of tangled cables with the Airpods, what they haven’t accounted for is losing them. As everyone knows, once you’ve put your headphones down somewhere they are known to scuttle off into a dark corner, never to be found again. And if you’ve paid £160 for them, you may be a bit panicked when this eventually happens.
A lot of people have complained about this with their release, calling for a ‘find my Airpods’ app on the phone already.
They need charging
Another backlash the Airpods have faced is they need to be charged up to work. Once fully charged they will allow you to listen to music for 5 hours, which many are saying isn’t long enough. Having another gadget that needs charging can be irritating, and really what was the problem with normal headphones?
If you choose to stick with the normal headphones and go down the adaptor route, this could also be an issue for charging; the headphone adaptor plugs into the charging port, meaning you’d have to choose between listening to music or charging your phone.
Overall, we can’t really see what the problem was with the old headphones, but then again we agree that any new technology is good and we also kind of want some…
We don’t know what it is about Apple, however much people complain everyone will still be flocking to buy the product when it comes out on the 16th of September and other companies will try to keep up with them.
So we guess there’s nothing more to say, except see you in the queue on the morning of the 16th!
