Our Guide to a Successful E-Commerce Site
Nov 15, 2016
When it comes to e-commerce sites, any business can utilise them, from office supplies to gym equipment, if you have a product to sell e-commerce will work for you. However, it is easy to slip into the trap of focusing on what it looks like and user experience over SEO. And when you do this, you are losing the opportunity to attract new and existing customers to purchasing more on your website.
We have come up with some guidelines that work to both improve your e-commerce, whilst also keeping your site attractive and user friendly at the same time.
Product descriptions
When setting up your e-commerce site you may not realise the importance of product descriptions for your SEO ranking. Many people have brief, uninformative or even no descriptions at all! All of which can be disastrous for where you end up ranking in Google.
For a product to do well on an e-commerce site, it needs a unique and engaging description that will result in more people being able to find you when searching for a product. We would recommend each product has up to 300 words for its description, using language that will appeal to what the customer has searched.
Product reviews
Offering product reviews alongside what you are selling is something that can not only improve your SEO ranking, but can also serve to give customers more trust in your brand. It has been revealed that around 80% of online customers give reviews as much importance as a personal recommendation by a friend.
Sites like Amazon are particularly good at implementing this on their pages; some of their most popular products have tens of thousands of reviews that work to boost their SEO rankings whilst also attracting more customers.
Social Sharing
Make sure that on every page where you are offering a product, you give customers the opportunity to share it with their friend on social media. This is a great way to get some free advertising and personal recommendations from your clients.
The more your products are shared online, the more interest this will generate as well as improving your SEO rankings greatly. Be sure to link through to the most popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Alt tags
E-commerce sites tend to have large amounts of images on them, so customers can see what they are potentially buying. On a site like this it is important to ensure that all images are accompanied by relevant alt text, this way Google can understand what you are representing and how this ties into your overall brand.
Where relevant it is a good idea to tie in keywords and your brands name, but just don’t overdo it!
Key words
It can be tempting to try and cram your product descriptions with keywords, but we can assure you prioritising this over intelligent content won’t work in your favour.
Instead of trying to get your company name in everywhere you can, work to include information about the quality of your services and that helps your customers.
So, with all these tips and more you can be sure to have both a good looking e-commerce site that your customers will trust and gives you a boost in the SEO rankings! What more could you possibly want?
