A Simple Guide to...Pinterest
May 15, 2017
If there ever was a site to procrastinate on, it’s Pinterest. The user is able to collect visuals and inspiration which they can collate and create boards, serving as an archive of materials. These boards can be viewed by all, and other users can ‘repin’ from your boards. For users, it’s a way to plan the future, if not to showcase their style for free!
Pinterest is underappreciated in terms of using it for business. We believe more people should take more notice of this platform, as we gain a large proportion of traffic to our website through Pinterest. Fun fact: the life of a Pinterest pin is 1,600 times longer than a Facebook post! So, your content is going to get more visibility over time and will be sending traffic months after it’s published. We appreciate Pinterest is a more fit for a visual and creative business as opposed to a more analytical business. You need to ask yourself whether Pinterest is the right platform for your business. If not, look out for our other Simple Guides!
We’ve created a simple guide below to starting out.
Setting up Pinterest
First steps to Pinning
So, you’re all set up- great! Now you can start pinning to your heart’s content. We warn you it can be very distracting and we’ve got lost in the world of Pinterest many a time. Set yourself a time limit to maximise your productivity. It’s a great Friday afternoon task! Pinning is easy when you know how.
Using Pinterest Efficiently
There are a few ways to really make your Pinterest the best it can be and more importantly get you that following and traffic through to your main website. Pinterest is really about showing the company’s inner style and creativity through the images you pin onto your boards. Pay attention to your boards cover photos and titles as they can play a massive part of the look and aesthetic of your Pinterest profile.
The Pinterest Glossary
We appreciate that Pinterest has a lot of terminologies that will need explaining to a new user. We’ve composed a list of a few that we needed to be explained when we started using Pinterest.
Boards - these are headings to which you categorise your pins- normally they all relate to each other. (For Example, the board may be named ‘Website Design Ideas’ which would hold all the images that relate to that heading).
Secret Boards – These are the same as boards (explained above), however, they are private and for your eyes only! So, if you’re working on a secret project you can still collate inspiration without giving anything away.
Pin – Another way of saying that you are adding an image to a board from an external website.
Repin – You’re sharing a pin that you have found on someone else’s Pinterest profile with your own followers.
We’ve covered the basics so; we hope this has helped you get started. Pinterest is a platform best learned by using it. So, have a play around- you really can’t make any mistakes. Just have fun with it! You’re always welcome to drop us a direct message, @thecreationlab on any of our platforms if you have any further questions, we’d be more than happy to help!
