What Makes An Infographic A Success?
Oct 12, 2016
An infographic is an image combined with facts; it’s designed to be informative and is a great tool when it comes to promoting your business on social media. It presents information quickly and clearly, and research has even been found to show that colour visuals increase the willingness to read by a whopping 80%.
Infographics are a great way to get more people interested in your business; they improve your sites SEO and work to bring more traffic through your website. They can be posted onto social media, creating more interest and forming link bait, directing customers to your site.
We specialise in producing great infographics here at The Creation Lab, so we thought we’d make a list of what makes one a success!
Unique
Infographics have become hugely popular recently, meaning that there are plenty out there, and they’re being viewed all the time. If you want your infographic to be successful you need to make sure that it stands out from all the other content out there.
It is said that we collectively take in five times more information in 2016 than we did in the 80’s, in fact it collates to around 285 pieces of content every single day now that social media has started to take over. So you need to have something that will dramatically stand out from the rest – in a good way – to ensure you get the most out of your company’s infographic.
There are a few ways in which you can do this; one is to give your infographic a great headline that will spike people’s attention. Obviously it needs to have relevance to what you are trying to put across in the image, but creating a unique, interesting title is a good place to start.
Another way is to include lots of graphic imagery, or in other words to show, not tell. People are more likely to be drawn to images than to text so use this to your advantage.
If your infographic blends into the general consensus, then it won’t stand out and therefore won’t generate interest and bring more people to your site. You need to get the balance just right!
Simple
The trick to creating successful infographics is to make sure that, although they are getting the right message across, they don’t overload your audience. An infographic that has too much data will cause people to switch off and therefore won’t get the message across that you are trying to express.
Although you need to impress with the look of your infographic to get people interested, this doesn’t always mean to cram in as much information as you can, in fact this can actually often backfire.
Keep the imagery and text clear, concise and simple to make sure that you get the most out of your infographic.
Creative
The overall look of an infographic can vary hugely, but there are often certain aspects that remain throughout. Graphically, particular features are important when designing such as white space. This is a big part of tying together an image; too much and it will look plain and empty, but too little and it can become overwhelming to look at, causing people to scroll past.
Another important part of an effective infographic is the fonts used. They need to work with the images to add to the overall feel and creativity of the design. Font can be as important as any other part of the design in an infographic, especially as what you are presenting is ultimately data and statistics.
Finally, for a really killer infographic the colour scheme needs to be perfectly balanced. It is usually advised that you stick to around three colours throughout to tie the whole thing together in a sharp and efficacious way. These colours should blend and complement each other to attract more people to the image.
Story
When producing an infographic for your business, it is a good idea to form a bit of a story for the reader to follow. This way the reader will be drawn into the image, making sure to read all the way to the end. This can be done with imagery throughout - say your business works around food; you could depict the harvesting process, or the journey from farm to shop.
This method will work to bring in the reader as well as to be visually pleasing and focused on the message you are trying to put across, resulting in the perfect infographic.
Easily Shareable
Once you have created the perfect infographic and posted it onto social media, you need to know that it won’t share itself! It is important to add a social sharing widget so that others have the opportunity to share the image with their friends and family.
Another good idea is to provide the html code, this way other websites can post the infographic with a link back to your own post. This will create more and more buzz around you and your business.
You can continue to use an infographic for as long as it is relevant to your business, but make sure not to post outdated content; this will only serve to show your company in the same light.
