Is Your Website A Trick or Treat for your Website Visitors?
Oct 28, 2016
Halloween is just around the corner, so we decided to ask that all important question – is your website a trick or is it a treat for your customers?
Website design is something that impacts significantly on the amount of people who visit your site and also on its bounce rate – the percentage of people who explore more than one page of your website. Your website not only needs to be responsive for those viewing on a tablet or mobile device, but also welcoming and aesthetically pleasing for your target audience.
So in the spirit of all things scary, we thought we would help you to give your regulars a treat on Monday instead of a fright! Here are our top tips when it comes to designing your perfect website.
Colour Scheme
One of the most important elements when it comes to your website looking good is choosing the right colour scheme. It needs to have continuity with your branding, so if you already have a logo it’s a good idea to pick whichever colours you have used in this as a base.
Using filters like transparency and other effects can bring a website to life, and you can always change the shading of the colours if you wish to. What you want for your customers is to instantly recognise you when they click onto the website, providing a familiarity and friendly feel to the site and your business.
Bespoke Elements
The type of interactivity you choose for the elements of your website can be very important; if they are dull you may put off customers and give them the wrong impression of your business. However, if it is too much and doesn’t fit with your company’s overall feel, it will look strange and off-putting.
Having your service blocks react when you hover over them makes a website more interesting and could mean the difference between someone switching off and staying put.
Another important aspect to web design is icons, making sure they stand out and are interactive to draw in the customers. When choosing icons for your website you want to make sure they are different to other similar companies out there, but you also want to make sure they are conveying the right message to your customers. If you pick a completely bonkers icon to be different, you could end up just confusing people!
Simplicity is key here, and once you have chosen the right icons for you they will give your website an extra interactive element and provide a more interesting site.
Images
The images you choose to have on your site represent the company and are very important because those are what your customers will first notice when they click onto your site. Stock images are great if you can’t afford your own photography, but if you can it’s always a good idea to represent your own products and services.
You could even use staff as the focus point so that customers may recognise them and feel more connected to the organisation. You can also get your branding into the photos if you choose to take your own, and having that on show at every opportunity is always a positive!
We usually recommend a photo to feature on the homepage as it peaks interest as soon as you click onto the site and can pave the way for the rest of the page.
Navigation
When designing a new website, it is vital that you consider how potential customers will navigate around your website; from the moment they land on your website you want them to be able to find everything they need as few clicks as possible.
Again, this will also reduce your website's bounce-rate and will therefore improve your Google ranking.
Video
The human brain absorbs visual information 6,000 times faster than text, so why not treat your website visitors with having a video on your website homepage to explain your services? Videos bring websites to life and Google have announced that in 2017 every website on page 1 of a Google search will contain a video, so Google with thank you too!
For some video inspiration, take a look at this article we wrote recently about the different types of promotional video we create here at The Creation Lab.

Overall, there are lots of ways you can improve your website design, whether it be through the images you use, the icons your customers click on, or simply the colours you use. All have an impact on your websites web traffic, and all are equally as important.
