Holiday Cards Through The Decades
Dec 05, 2018
1950s/1960s
In the 1950s and 1960s it was very common to see more cartoon-type images of characters such as Santa Claus and the reindeers on cards. This brought a new creative design edge to cards. Joke cards also became increasingly popular during this time.
1970s
The 1970s saw handmade cards come back into fashion, but in a much simpler form. Instead of exquisitely detailed pieces, such as those from the 1920s, these cards had a much more animated feel and were simple but effective.
1980s
In the 1980s, more cartoon-type/animated images increased in popularity. This was highly representative of the strong culture of the time, with art and design being an enormous part of it. During this highly politically-charged time, some cards also included hidden political messages.
1990s
The 1990s brought a brand-new outlook on cards. With home photography being very popular, more and more people took family photos to use on their own cards. This was a lovely way to give a personal touch to celebrating the festive season. Popular culture also had a huge influence on cards in the 1990s – graphics from popular films, such as Home Alone (1990), featured on some cards and there was a comic-book style approach to some too!
2000s
The 2000s sparked a flourish in the number of ‘cute’ cards. Cards featuring cute versions of Santa, cats in hats and all kinds of animals in Christmas gear were sent out into the shops and received by many. This is still largely the case now, with penguins and polar bears, animated teddy bears and dogs all over our cards. Christmas scenery cards were also very popular, making us all dream of an idyllic snowy Christmas setting! A revolution for the internet came mid-nineties with the development of the e-card. This meant that you could custom-design your own cards but send them to your friends and family via. email!
2010s-Present
The 2010s continue to express the love for cute things on our cards. E-cards are still used, and it seems that we have a mix of various decades of styles of cards in our shops. From huge vibrant cards, to the e-cards delivered to our phones they’ve changed a lot!
