What Exactly are SEO Keywords?
Feb 16, 2018
If we’ve recently created your website, you’re likely to have been sent a list of proposed SEO keywords. If you’re not exactly sure what they’re used for, this blog is for you!
We conduct keyword research because it can show what search terms your audience are using. It’s not surprising for our clients to favour one set of words when describing their products or services, only to find that their target audience are using completely different search terms in Google.
It doesn’t make much sense to optimise a website for words that your potential customers won’t use. Keyword research makes sure that you are using the same words as your target audience, ensuring they can find your website when searching the web.
Once we’ve found and agreed on the keywords that work for your business, they need to be put to work. It is recommended that relevant keywords should be included in several high-attention areas on your website.
Relevant keywords should be featured in:
- The title of the page
- The URL slug
- The page copy
- The meta tags and descriptions
- Image alt tags
It is important to remember that keyword relevance is more important than keyword density when it comes to search engine optimisation. In fact, Google may penalise you if you overuse keywords, by giving you a lower ranking or removing your website completely.
It is important to remember that successfully optimised websites tend to have thousands of keywords, because Google picks up words in the content as keywords whether they are targeted or not. At The Creation Lab we tend to target around 5-6 keywords that we think your business will be able to rank highly in Google for. In reality, Google is looking at the entirety of your websites content.
We’ll send you a list of proposed keywords that include an average number of how many times they are searched for in a month and if they are low, medium or high competition. The aim is to choose a keyword that has a high number of average monthly searches but is low competition. This way, your website is more likely to reach a top spot in Google over time.
SEO Keywords should be refreshed every now and again, to ensure the keywords on your website are still being searched for by your target audience.
