How to Manage Your Social Media Accounts Effectively
Sep 17, 2015
As a business, managing multiple social media accounts may seem like too much to handle. Like juggling many, many tennis balls at once:
We want to make sure that you stay on the ball. So, whether you have 1 minute, 5 minutes or an hour to put aside each day, here’s how you effectively manage your business’ social media accounts!
Keep your logins safe (2 minutes)
There’s nothing more frustrating than forgetting a password when you’re in a hurry! For this reason, we recommend keeping all your social media logins together in a safe place, whether that’s in a document on your computer, or written on a good old fashioned piece of paper.
Make a plan (1 hour)
Drawing up a social media plan in advance will save you valuable time in the future. Having a plan keeps you prepared; it means that you avoid those awful, time consuming moments staring at your computer screen, thinking “What shall I post?”
Create a spreadsheet featuring each of your social media accounts, and for each day of the week, write an outline or post idea. Try to follow the social media rule of thirds, making it 1/3 about promoting your business, 1/3 about sharing industry content, and 1/3 personal interactions and building your personal brand.
To get you started, here is a very quick example of ideas across three social media accounts:

As you create your plan, remember to think of your audience – their age range, their likes and dislikes, etc. You can also come back and tweak this plan at any time as you discover what works well and what doesn’t!
Daily checklist (5 minutes)
Once you have your plan in place, all you need is 5 minutes a day to check in on each of your accounts. We recommend ticking off the following tasks as you go:
- Acknowledge new Twitter followers with a quick tweet
- Reply to messages
- Find out what’s trending today – is there anything you can share/comment on, to join the conversation?
- Post your pre-planned update for the day (this could be scheduled beforehand in Hootsuite)
- Like/comment one or two relevant posts in your network
Do this each day, and you will soon feel in control of your social media accounts. In time you will also start seeing more engagement from your audience!
We hope you now feel equipped and inspired to manage all your social media accounts effectively – but if you still have unanswered questions, please feel free to ask us anything!
