5 Guaranteed Ways to beat Writer's Block
Aug 21, 2017
If you find yourself staring at a blank screen, it can feel like you’ve forgotten how to write- Writer’s block. It can be the most infuriating thing at times but with writer’s block comes great ideas, once you’ve overcome it! We’ve put together 5 simple things you can do to beat writer’s block -
Consult
If writers block occurs when you’re in the office, take a look around you. Your co-workers aren’t just people that you sit next to day in and day out; they are part of the same team. So, why not ask them for ideas? Here at The Creation Lab, we use messaging tool Slack, which allows you to privately message colleagues. It may be a nicer way to ask people without announcing it to the whole company!
Take a Break
Taking a break from your office can often spark ideas! Get away from your computer and actually experience something, even if it’s just a walk up to the local shop or even around the nearest park. Stepping out of the office can have a massive effect on creativity and concentration, you’ll return to the office with renewed energy and ready to give writing another go- you’ll be surprised how easy writing comes to you!
Read, Look and Consume
If your job involves creative writing, whether that’s writing for your websites blog or sending out newsletters, one thing that you should constantly be doing is reading and consuming everything that’s around you. Head out to museums and subscribe to newsletters that bring you up to date on trends in your industry – basically, never stop learning! The more you read the less writer's block you will get.
Out of the Ordinary
Simple things like changing your commute into the office can help but, if that isn’t possible just start typing. Type anything in your head, get it out! This is called free-writing, a tip learnt at university - it can really help spark an idea. Free- writing requires you to constantly write for one minute on a certain subject. It doesn’t matter what you write, even if it’s just writing one word over and over again.
Create a Plan
If you have found a subject but are unsure how to start the article or blog, then begin with constructing an outline. A bullet point for the intro is a good place to start, keep it brief and include any key facts and figures you wish to include, this way you can build your article around these. A plan can also help you achieve a balanced argument and help you to stay on topic!
