The Amazon Echo Dot - Revolutionising Search
Oct 21, 2016
If you haven’t already heard about this amazing contraption, get ready to be impressed. The Amazon Echo Dot is a new product rolled out this year that works through voice control to assist in the kitchen, dim the lights, even order your dinner for you; yep that’s right folks the future we have all dreamed of is finally here. It uses Google’s Hummingbird algorithm on a whole new level, the device can both interpret the intent of what someone is searching for and judge the context of it to give the user a detailed relevant answer to their question.
It works by connecting to a range of different sites and apps via Bluetooth, such as Heart Radio, Spotify, Uber and many more, known to the device as skills. These skills automatically update all the time and are consistently adding to what the device is capable of. Sounds revolutionary you say? We think so too.
The Dot can connect to speakers with its Bluetooth or with the accompanying audio cable included in the product, but as well as this it also has a built in speaker. This means that it can work on many levels, for example as an alarm clock in your bedroom, a sound system in the lounge or a chef’s assistant in the kitchen. It works anywhere in the house where you may not have a sound system set up.
Not only this, but it has far-field voice recognition, so even if you have music playing or you’re in a completely different room, just by mustering the phrase ‘Alexa’ you trigger the device and Dot responds instantly.
As well as being a huge help in the house, the Echo Dot is small in size and won’t ruin the ambiance of your decoration. It comes in either black or white and easily blends in to its surroundings, so you don’t need to worry about your interior décor!
It seems that getting up and doing things yourself is a thing of the past now Echo Dot has arrived, ran out of a household product? ‘Alexa order more toilet rolls.’ Fancy a takeaway? ‘Alexa order my easy order from dominos.’ It can even go as far as to check if your car needs petrol with the Automatic app!
Indeed this device really is a lazy man’s dream, however as well as being a servant to the terminally lazy, this new technology could effectively change lives for people with disabilities. For the blind it can read news headlines, order takeaways and request taxis. For those who are bed bound it can order the weekly shopping, dim the lights and shut doors. We think that this device really is a turning point for showing the true potential of what technology can do.
And at only £50 we think that this product is a definite must have for any home environment, not only for the revolutionary technological advances, but because who wouldn’t want pizza at the sound of a word? We know that we do! And having overtaken the Kindle as Amazon’s top selling product, we don’t think it will be long until Alexa becomes a part of every family.
