Google’s Mobile-Friendly Update: Everything You Need To Know
Apr 01, 2016
STILL WONDERING WHY IT’S SO IMPORTANT FOR YOUR WEBSITE TO BE MOBILE-OPTIMISED? LOOK NO FURTHER…
Back to basics: Why do I need a mobile website?
These days it is vital that your website is mobile optimised.
- More people make online searches on mobile devices than they do on a desktop, it’s a fact.
- If a website is built for desktop users then it will be slow to load on mobile. This will increase your bounce-rate, which means that people are clicking that back button within the first 3 seconds of arriving on your website.
- If your website visitors have to pinch and zoom to read the text and click buttons and links on your website, then they will soon become frustrated and lose interest.
But It’s not just about pleasing your users, this is also about keeping Google happy.
WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW: MOBILEGEDDON APRIL 2015
In April last year, Google announced that they were going to start penalising websites which weren’t responsive on mobile devices, and they began giving websites which adhered to this a Mobile Friendly tag on mobile search.
The build up to this change was humungous, and it soon became known as Mobilegeddon. But how much of an impact did this really have on your website ranking?
If you were underwhelmed by the effects of Mobilegeddon on both your Google ranking and traffic to your website, don’t get too comfortable. Companies without the Mobile Friendly tag beside their website in Google saw an average of a 30% drop in website traffic, and those with it saw a 30% increase.

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS: MAY 2016
This month, Google announced that they are going to “increase the effect of the ranking signal” in May 2016. But what does this mean?
If your website isn’t mobile-friendly, perhaps a 30% drop in web traffic wasn’t too detrimental to your company back in April 2015, but imagine if it drops by another 30% - you’ll end up seeing just over 40% of the amount of traffic coming through to your website than there was a year ago.
If your website is already mobile-friendly, fear not! Google have said, “If you’ve already made your site mobile-friendly, you will not be impacted by this update”, but the reality is actually quite different! If sites which aren’t responsive are seeing a drop in the rankings and a decrease in traffic, the sites which are will begin to creep up Google searches and see an increase in traffic.
