A Simple Guide to...Blogging
Jun 05, 2017
A website needs to be in a constant state of refresh and a blog will help achieve this. Not only does blogging provide a way to engage with your visitors, it can bring more traffic to your website. Blogs offer a wealth of information about the industry you are in and can help explain who you are and what your brand and company are about; it gives you a tone of voice.
Blogs are a great way to get your website noticed by Google. Google recognises when a website is regularly updated with fresh content and as a result, places you higher in their result pages. In fact, blogging is a natural way to optimise your site for search engines, which leads to new prospective clients discovering your brand. Put blogging at the heart of your social media strategy, each time you publish a new post, promote it by putting a link in a status on Facebook or Tweet it out on Twitter. Blogging is fun and easy when you know how; we’ve put together this simple guide to getting the best out of a blog.
Getting Started
Determine your style
A blog should be an extension of your already established brand. As a company, you will have already designed your logo and chosen your colour palette. Take inspiration from your current branding to determine the tone of voice of your writing, as well as the post structure. For example, if you are in a more serious sector, keep your writing informative with limited images. If you are in a creative environment, you need to showcase your creativity. Keep it fun with infographics and enticing use of wording.
How to write a blog that people want to read
You know what you’re talking about, but first-time web visitors are not necessarily experts as well. The whole point of a blog post is to inspire, give advice or simply to give updates on your company. The keyword there being, simply. A simple blog post that gets to the point and has an element of the brand's personality is more likely to engage a reader, to then share and explore the website further. Breaking up the blog post with images and infographics to explain important facts is a great way to keep people’s attention. Along with links to products/services that you’ve mentioned or sub-headings and regular paragraphs.
Four BIG things you need to stick to
Imagine a great post with amazing advice and interesting facts, but no one saw it. Well, without an enticing headline you will have no click through; keep well away from a long, lousy title. Struggling for title ideas? Try- ‘5 steps to…’ for a simple but informative header. Mix a great header with a gripping one-liner intro, and you’ve got your reader gripped to want to read more. Stick to these simple rules of blogging and you’re on your way to a successful blog.
